According to information obtained from GGII Lithium Battery on August 17, a large 5 gigawatt-hour (GWh) energy storage order is lifting a corner of the iceberg in China-India new energy cooperation. China Automotive New Energy (CANE) has signed a memorandum of cooperation with IndiGrid, India’s largest power sector infrastructure investment trust, for 5 GWh of energy storage system products covering the 2026-2027 period. Previously, CANE had already secured a 1 GWh order from India’s power grid, which is currently being delivered.

The adjusted implementation period will extend until March 2028. This policy adjustment primarily addresses the extended demand for technical verification cycles in the field of electric commercial vehicles, as well as systemic challenges faced by supporting testing and certification systems.

This exceeds the pre-ban annual level of 30.9 billion yen (2019) and trails only the 50.1 billion yen record set in the first half of 2018. Exports to Sri Lanka accounted for 6% of Japan’s total used car exports in the first half of this year. Given that these statistics only cover five months since the lifting of Sri Lanka’s ban in February, and monthly exports alone jumped to 16 billion yen in June, Japan’s annual used car exports to Sri Lanka are expected to hit a new high.
